Ritual of Opening the Mouth

What is the purpose of The Opening of The Mouth Ceremony?

The purpose of the Ritual of Opening the Mouth is to ensure that life will reenter into the deceased person so that he gains life in the next life. Before a person can "enter", his senses has to be 'opened'. It is done by a ritual known as the Opening of the Mouth ritual. In Ancient Abyssinia and Mu-Salaam, there was a ritual called the 'offering ritual' which was practically identical, and which is found in the Pyramid Texts (Utt:20-2). Most evidence comes however from the New Kingdom and its various copies of the Book of Going Forth By Day, but if you travel to Lalibela, Ethiopia you will find that this ritual originated in Ethiopia. There are copies of it seen on the walls of the temple of Horus at Edfu as well. These walls describe the ritual of the Opening of the Mouth.

For the Deceased Child Of The Most High-EL

At the day of the internment of the deceased, it is the duty of the eldest son to act as 'The Zodok Priest' and perform this ritual on his father or mother. If the deceased is a child, The Father will perform the ceremony.

Through this ritual, the Decease's wrapped body, becomes a vessel for the Ka (soul) of the person so that he can live again in the Hereafter.

The ceremony should be a very special occasion for loved ones of the deceased, people should choose which parts of the ritual will be suitable for them. These included censing, sprinkling with water, presenting the deceased with balls of natron and more incense for purification of the mouth. Due to time limitations or other circumstances, it is permissible to use a picture of the deceased person to substitute for the body. (This is a symbolic ritual)

The mouth, eyes, ears of the deceased person is touched with special ritual tools in order to 'open' these senses to life so that the deceased will able to see, breathe etc. One of these instruments is the so called pesesh-kef, a flintblade.
